Dramaturgo nigeriano. Después de estudiar en Leeds, Inglaterra, regresó a Nigeria donde editó revistas literarias, enseñó teatro y literatura en la universidad y fundó dos compañías teatrales. Sus obras, escritas en inglés, incorporan las tradiciones populares del África oriental y suelen centrarse en los conflictos entre tradición y progreso. Las escenas retrospectivas (flashbacks), el simbolismo y las tramas ingeniosas contribuyen a elaborar sus ricas estructuras dramáticas. Sus obras de mayor profundidad revelan el desencanto con los liderazgos autoritarios en África y con la sociedad nigeriana en su conjunto. Entre sus obras se cuentan La danza del bosque (1960), El león y la joya (1963), La muerte y el caballero del rey (1975) y From Zia, with Love (1992). Ha escrito numerosos poemarios y su novela más conocida es Los intérpretes (1965). Es un gran defensor de la democracia nigeriana, y ha estado en prisión en numerosas ocasiones, además de sufrir el exilio. En 1986 se convirtió en el primer escritor africano de raza negra en recibir el Premio Nobel de Literatura.
